Privacy cannot be dealt with simply .. a pointer to a place to iscuss issues. maybe
13:00:25 [mhausenblas]
timbl, I agree we will not be able to deal with it completely in the RDB2RDF WG
13:01:08 [mhausenblas]
though better write up some good practices than ignoring the topic at all. in this sense I'm happy with danbri's comment and thankful for it
13:01:18 [timbl]
Nowadays large companies don't need IDs to be able to correlate things about people -- to give the impression that deciding whethr to make t ID is a critical step would be misleading. It is wherth you publish the daya.
13:02:30 [mhausenblas]
ok, point taken. will think about how to address the issue (in a non-normative doc, so not R2RML syntax)
13:02:46 [mhausenblas]
how was the product dev lab, btw? hope all went fine?
13:04:28 [mhausenblas]
the new voiD editor was unfortunately not yet ready for prime time - a preview is at http://ld2sd.deri.org/ve2/
13:05:45 [mhausenblas]
would have loved to be with you. but at least a colleague of mine, Andre, made it and I hope he showed Sigma ;)

timbl, absolutely fair point about other properties being able to identify also (see netflix hoopla, various stats about name/age/zip being 80% unique etc); the difference with URI in that sense is more of degree than kind.
15:55:22 [danbri]
however as soon as you take one of these bits of data and say it's not just a property of the person, but the ID that can be used to go to the Web and look up useful info on them, then you bring in additional concerns -
15:55:49 [danbri]
- like the security and integrity of the server hosting the data; and not just now but in a few years time...
15:57:16 [danbri]
if i convince the world that http://danbri.org/foaf.rdf#mhausenblas is a useful URI for michael, then 3 years later I neglect sysadmin duties and get hacked, there's a chance malicious info about him could be injected into my site
15:57:41 [danbri]
so there are responsibilities and risks that come when we freely mint and host URIs for others
16:07:33 [mhausenblas]
yes, danbri! this is, I think, a very nice summary for an RDB2RDF Note ... will use it, if you allow :)
16:08:45 [danbri]
of course, if folks agree with it!
16:09:02 [danbri]
i won't join the group but am happy to read over any pre-drafts of things on this topic

very cool, thank danbri

[Global Notice] Again, for those that haven't been around, don't click the links that are being spammed into channels. You will turn your browser into several IRC drones and subsequently get yourself banned from the network. ChanOps, I suggest making use of the +r or +R chanmodes ( http://freenode.net/using_the_network.shtml ).

[Global Notice] Hi all. As you may be aware we've been having a somewhat annoying problem with spam bots hassling channels and requesting people visit various URLs. Please do not visit these URLs as doing so will turn many javascript enabled browsers into spammers and may cause you to be automatically banned from the network. /mode <yournick> +w for more information as it becomes available and as always drop by #freenode if you're require assistance.
